Pomapata — exciting Trekking Adventures
Why?The Quebrada (= valley) Condor is one of the highlights of the Pomapata area. Until late May this valley is not populated by campesinos or their animals, but by millions of flowers and colors as far as the eyes reach. In its lower part the valley is gorge-like: steep and narrow, and we hike up along the thundering torrent, under old trees and between lush vegetation. Suddenly the valley opens up ahead of us. We continue to hike higher up, passing a swampy area and stay at or near some small picturesque huts. Further up we find colorful lagunas beneath rugged peaks rising high above us. In this area we want to explore more, and many side valleys invite us to venture ahead. Feel like Humboldt and be the first one to set step in a remote valley...
Where? For your convenience our trek starts in Chiquian and finishes there as well. We pick you up, accompany you all the way until we deliver you back to your hostal. And we will assist you in catching a convenient bus back to Lima or Huaraz or any other destination of your choice.
When? This trek can be done throughout the year. However we recommend the dry season (May through October), when trails are in better condition. In early May the plants are blossoming, the whole Quebrada Condor explodes in blossoms, which is a most wonderful sight. Plan about 7 days for this trip, more and less is easily possible here.
Who?The trekking towards the Laguna Condorcoccha is easy as done by us. Your gear is carried by our mules and horses, so you have an easy walk at high altitude on comparatively good trails. Distances are convenient and plenty of stops for enjoying nature and the views are part of this tour. The altitudes are around 3.300 meters near Chiquian and Pomapata and reach to appx. 4.200 meters near the Laguna Winco. If you like, you can climb up to a pass of almost 4.800 meters elevation with exciting views from up there!
What?Adventurers who do this trek usually have the equipment they need, from tent to sleeping bag, from cooking stove to water bottle. Our trail guide will bring his own equipment and can sleep one or two of you in his tent (Sherpa Dome Plus). We provide the pack animals and the trail guide to show you the way, to bring you there and back safely. Upon request we can provide you with high-quality gear like tent (Sherpa Dome Plus or North Face), backpack (Lowe, Gregory), sleeping bag or stove. Some food we buy together in Chiquian; the price for this food is not included in our price. The food we eat prepared by us (i.e. pachamanca) is entirely included in the price.
Route: Chiquian - Pomapata - Quebrada Condor - Laguna Condorcoccha - Laguna Winco - Pomapata - Huasta (optional) - Chiquian
From Chiquian we pass Quero towards Pomapata, where we have our first stay. We discover the village and its ambiente, then explore the Condor valley, with its beautiful lagunas and rugged peaks rising above them. Up there we stay some nights and do smaller trips into side valleys with remote and hidden treasures of nature. On the way back to Pomapata we stop at the thermal water of Conoc to relax and purify our minds. From Pomapata we can go back to Chiquian via Quero/Quisipata or along a different route high up near 4.000 meters elevation, passing La Merced and reaching Huasta with its colonial architecture and magnificent church.
